THE LECTURES
The lecture on Christian Science given in Third Church of Christ, Scientist, by Bicknell Young, was the first lecture delivered in the church edifice since the building, including the reading-rooms, was fully opened to the public. The lecture was attentively listened to by a large and appreciative audience, which filled the auditorium to its utmost capacity. The lecturer was introduced by W. N. Miller, K.C., who spoke as follows:—
It is most gratifying to know that Christian Science, the subject about which we have come to hear something definite and authentic, has become an object of earnest inquiry and consideration by a vast number of intelligent men and women. The discoverer of something of vital moment to every individual must, if of a broad-minded, loving, and generous disposition, long intensely to make that discovery known as widely as possible, in order that all may share in its benefits. Mrs. Eddy, after years of devoted and continuous study of the Bible, rediscovered the new-old religion preached and practised by Jesus the Christ, and verified the completeness and accuracy of her discovery by evidence of the same nature as that relied on by the great Wayshower in support of his mission. John's oft-quoted question: "Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" brought a complete and convincing statement of truth from Jesus: "God your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard;" and then, in telling words, he gave a graphic description of the many wonderful works he had just performed.
Mrs. Eddy, having received this great revelation, took every precaution to keep it "pure and undefiled," so that it should not become beclouded or again be lost. In addition to other methods of upholding its truth, she established a board of lectureship, consisting of duly qualified exponents of Christian Science, to explain what it is and what it does, and to correct erroneous impressions current about it and its Discoverer.—Correspondence.
