[Written for the Sentinel.]

FOREST STILLNESS

The forest stillness ever speaks of GodIn language clear to those with ear attunedTo nature's silent praise, her harmony. No anthem ever sung had e'er the powerTo lift the heart to God,—reveal the truth,—As forest hymn in majesty of songUnvoiced save as the human heart translatesThe depths, the heights, in language of its own.To each who comes with open thought to hear,The forest gives its message, shows that peaceAnd joy and strength can only be attainedAs man but seeks to know God's will, God's law,—And seeking finds, and finding knows naught elseBut to obey; and in obedience rests,—His life attuned to nature's harmony.
