Los Angeles (Cal.) Tribune
One of the most hopeful signs of the times is the ever-increasing interest in the study of the Bible. It is said that more Bibles are sold today than ever before in the world's history. One of the great factors in this "back to the Bible" movement is the spiritual awakening that is sweeping over the land. Large numbers of people are now turning to the grand old book of our fathers as the panacea for all human ills. Many are finding new meanings in old familiar texts, and many have found surcease from physical suffering and mental anguish. Multitudes are also finding great joy in the discovery that the Bible texts possess a spiritual meaning which, when understood, make this book a very practical guide in the affairs of life. Moreover, this spiritual interpretation removes the seeming conflict that has been suffered to exist between Biblical teaching and that of natural science, geology, and astronomy.
The Bible is not only the most important book ever written, but it is vastly more. It is, in fact, the foundation stone of all our present-day civilzation. All human activities find their resting-places upon this rock. All law, both civil and criminal, primarily begins with the ten commandments; all that makes for perfection in living comes from the precepts of the Master, and the hope of eternal life latent in every breast is confirmed by the gospel of the New Testament.
In the Bible is also seen, from Genesis to Revelation, the advancing light of spiritual understanding in the minds of men. This growth proceeds through the patriarchs, prophets, and wise men, until it culminates in its fulness in Jesus Christ, who gave those who were ready a higher interpretation of law. A striking instance of this is contained in that wonderful sermon on the mount. Speaking to his disciples, he said: "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." It is this doctrine of love that is redeeming the world, and will not cease its activity until the kingdom of heaven is established among men.
