In a recent issue of your paper there appeared an item from Washington headed "Suffers for His Faith," wherein it was stated that a gunner's mate had been severely punished for refusing to be vaccinated, his refusal being based on the ground that, as a Christian Scientist, he could not conscientiously submit.

Each individual should be entitled to form his own decision on such questions, but the account as published might mislead many of your readers as to the attitude of Christian Science in such cases. Mrs. Eddy long ago defined the duty and attitude of Christian Scientists toward the law. In the Christian Science Sentinel of Feb. 21, 1901, under the title "Obey the Law," she published the following:

On the subject of reporting contagion I have this to say: I have always believed that Christian Scientists should be law abiding; and, actuated by this conviction, I authorized the following statement, which appeared in the Boston Herald about one year ago:—
