Over four years ago I was healed through this blessed truth which is free to all. Before Christian Science came to my notice I was a mere wreck for a period of about ten years, with what physicians pronounced complete exhaustion of the nervous system. My nerve suffering was no mere pretense, as I seemed to have a terrible fear even of my own dear mother, and a dislike for her. Many times I threatened to take my life, thinking that this would end all my troubles, that then I would be at peace with God, my friends, and relatives. I did not realize that God is a God of the living and not of the dead.
I tried materia medica and other material methods faithfully, with only temporary relief. I continued in this way of doctoring until Christian Science found me in bed, where for sixteen weeks I had been suffering. The truth was brought to me by a dear cousin, also by a kind practitioner who came with her and gave me treatment. I remember being told that God means good, and that good is only another term for God; also that devil is the same as evil. I afterward learned the true meaning of both these words. The definition of God as given in the Glossary of Science and Health (p. 587) I found most helpful. When we know how to cast out the evil, or devil (false thinking), and thereby become conscious of the allness of good, we are really healed,—morally, physically, and spiritually.
I felt rather discouraged the evening before the practitioner's second visit, and thought of giving it all up, though I had said before trying Christian Science I would give it a fair trial, as I knew all other remedies had utterly failed in my case; but I felt vastly different the next morning. I had not realized that I could be healed with absent treatment. In ten days after my first treatment I was able to eat dinner with the family, and the world looked pleasant and beautiful to me. I am truly grateful to God, and to Mrs. Eddy, Truth's messenger, who has brought to humanity this Christ-healing which sets the captive free.
