A SURE HAVEN

During a yachting cruise on the west coast of Scotland, I remember on one occasion being compelled to take shelter from a storm in an almost landlocked loch. Having chosen a spot where I knew that the holding ground was excellent, I anchored until the storm was over, feeling assured of safety. For some time that night I lay listening to the howling of the squalls as they came tearing down upon us from the mountains, lashing the usually quiet waters of the loch into spray, and beating it against the sides of the yacht. I knew, however, that there was nothing to fear. The storm was powerless to harm, for the anchor was firmly fixed in the sure holding ground.

Often since, when in seeming trouble, my thoughts have gone back to that night, and I have been greatly helped by seeing how very similar are the experiences of all of us in our "passage from sense to Soul" (Science and Health, p. 566). In this passage at times all is peaceful and progress seems easy, all around is sunshine and calm. Then one day mayhap there arises a storm of error, all seems dark and sunless, while material sense howls and beats upon us. At such a time we may not be able to advance; but we can always retire for shelter into a quiet haven within, a haven of spiritual consciousness, knowing that we have our anchor fixed in sure holding ground, the realization of the omnipresence and omnipotence of divine Love. Knowing that, as Paul says, our life is "hid with Christ in God," we need never fear the seeming, the raging of error.

When the storm is over and once more the sun is shining, we advance joyously on our way, seeing that in reality the sun had not ceased to shine, but was only obscured by clouds, to mortal belief by a false material sense. We may therefore go on our way with rejoicing and fresh courage, knowing that we have always a sure haven within, where we can retire and hold fast our position, safe in our Leader's assurance that "divine Science rolls back the clouds of error with the light of Truth" (Ibid., p. 557).
