PAINLESS PROGRESS

With the new birth that comes to us in Christian Science, there dawns a clearer vision and the ability to utilize past experiences which at the time seemed to have no permanent value. Anything in our past lives that points to Principle is a guide-post put up for the use of all who are traveling the same road on which we are journeying in our passage from sense to Soul.

One lovely summer day I went with a party of young people for a long walk to one of the highest points in the Sussex downs. It was very pleasant walking on the short turf, beautified by patches of purple heather and furze bushes. We were young, and happy with the sense of freedom which comes with an "out for the day." I cannot remember thinking much about the lovely view which was spread out all around us, till suddenly—as it seemed to me—we reached the high point to which we had been wending our way.

We had been gradually ascending all the way, but I have no recollection of any effort such as I have since experienced in climbing high hills, the ascent being so gradual that the sense of pleasure never flagged. And what of the view? Since that day, many years ago, I have been in many countries and have seen many wonderful sights, but I cannot remember seeing anything that to me was so wonderful as the panorama spread out before us on that summer day. We were looking down over several counties and to my eyes the sense of vastness was bewildering, the sudden change of view was so unexpected and overwhelming.
