PLEASURES

The notion is generally held that many of the pleasures of this life, including those which we most keenly enjoy, are sinful; that is, they violate some law which governs man's being. This, of course, carries the correlated notion that such pleasures are followed by penalties, such as pain, satiety, disgust, etc., and that the measure of the enjoyment is the measure of the punishment. Many who try to convince themselves that the pleasures are worth the price, encourage themselves in the pursuit and indulgence of what they regard as sinful pleasures, and thus grow more and more accustomed to the thought of habitual wrong-doing. To such persons the lines of Pope too frequently apply:—

Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace.
