AN ATTEMPTED SWINDLE

The circular letter recently sent to First Readers of branch churches and societies throughout the country, signed with the name Eli N. Dow and purporting to be an authorized movement to solicit funds for The Mother Church, was a fraudulent scheme by which some one hoped to swindle Christian Scientists out of large sums of money. The fictitious Mr. Dow, however, sadly underrated the alertness and intelligence of those whom he expected to catch with his crafty bait, and it has been gratifying to note that Christian Scientists, with all their loyalty to the interests of The Mother Church, were not deceived by his scheme. The would-be swindler is now under arrest.

It is perhaps unnecessary to add that the statements in regard to the affairs of The Mother Church, which were so dramatically set forth in the circular letter, are absolutely false. The Mother Church is in a prosperous condition and well able to take care of all its affairs, including the defense of pending litigation which has no legitimate foundation and which should cause Christian Scientists no uneasiness.
