Christian Science teaches that spiritual power, reflected from God, is amply sufficient to overcome all beliefs in the power of matter and the actuality of disease, but the demonstration of this truth is measured by the growth of the individual consciousness in the understanding of the real man and in the disappearance of the fears and false beliefs of generations back. The works of Christian Science consist of the healing of disease, the overcoming of sin, and the elevation of the ideals in the direction of God, all of which are manifested in a pure and healthy mind, which is imaged in the bodily expression. The work of Christian Scientists is so to live that evil has no abiding place in them, and that their "faith with understanding" will gradually bring this ideal manifestation. But this work is all mental.

In the present state of human thought Mrs. Eddy has advised that in the case of a broken bone it were better to have it set by a surgeon, but this does not detract from the fact that many such cases have been healed without the aid of a surgeon. God is Spirit, and His agencies must be spiritual. His power to heal transcends the use of "bright sun, fresh air, and pure water," and the manipulation of the body, as much as it does pills and powders. If more faith to heal is placed in sun, air, and water, no matter how much we may appreciate them, than in God, then faith in God would be superfluous; but Christian Science gives all power to God and to God alone, and this faith becomes knowledge when continued positive results are attained by the application of God's laws to the solving of all problems.

As the churchmen are working for the betterment of mankind, and as that also is the particular work of Christian Science, Christian Scientists appreciate and honor them for their good works and the noble sacrifices that so many of them have made.
