I came to Christian Science solely for physical healing

I came to Christian Science solely for physical healing. I had been pretty well through the medical mill, and I may say in passing that I had gone pretty well through the mill of sin, too. I am glad and thankful to be able to state that Christian Science has healed me of some of the sinful inclinations which I formerly had, and though perfection has not been reached as yet, some progress has been made, and "progress," our text-book tells us, "is the law of God" (Science and Health, p. 233). Since God's law is supreme, and having made some progress, we have good reason to know that by patient continuance in well doing still farther advance can be made.

Christian Science healed me in three days of what materia medica had failed to reach in about three years; that is, a bowel disorder. And yet I was not satisfied. I had received the "sign" in this short time, but because one who is not a Scientist had told me that the healing was quick, I expected to get rid of all my ailments at once. Fortunately for me I was not healed instantaneously; if I had been healed in that way I do not believe I would now be offering this testimony, because at the time that I sought Christian Science treatment religion interested me very little, if at all. The healing of other ailments seemed to me to be very, very slow; so much so that I discontinued attending the Sunday services and the Wednesday evening meetings for a while. True, I continued to read to some extent, and usually went over the Lesson-Sermon Sunday morning about the time services were being held. Generally, though, I took care to be smoking a cigar while doing this. I am glad to be able to state that I have also been healed of this habit. I stopped smoking several times without attempting to apply my understanding of Science, and I went back to the habit just as often until, one day, I lost my position and felt somewhat disgusted. When I got home I lighted a cigarette, but the odor seemed so offensive to me that I sat right down and declared the truth for myself for about fifteen minutes, and have not smoked since that time, nor have I had any desire to do so.

My mother passed on, supposedly from lung trouble, and it appeared at one time as if I were going the same way. It was some years after I came into Christian Science before this phase of the trouble was wholly overcome. Science and Health (p. 410) tells us that "every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger," and while these trials at times seemed to be very hard, my faith became stronger, and the trouble was finally obliterated.
