OUR DAILY BREAD: THE MANUAL

A careful and prayerful study of our Manual will reveal many gems of thought not to be discovered by an occasional reading of the book. A tower of strength to workers in every field, in every department of church work, it also contains many helpful lessons for every honest student of Christian Science. In the home, in the business world, in school and social life, we need the valuable instructions for guidance, protection, and wisdom that may be gleaned from its illumined pages.

May not a mother or a father find much food for thought concerning the government of children in Article 1, Section 9: "Without a proper system of government and form of action, nations, individuals, and religion are unprotected." Is there not a gentle reminder of our duty to our children, that obedience, order, courtesy should be established in our homes? That children should be required to perform services "promptly and well" in the home, and thus become fitted for the work that lies before them, as home-keepers, church-members, as citizens?

In the administration of household or business affairs, in problems involving financial questions, in dealing with those who serve us, or those whom we serve in any capacity, let us daily, hourly remember that rule which every Christian Scientist should know by heart, viz., Sect. 5 of Article XXIV: "God requires wisdom, economy, and brotherly love to characterize all the proceedings of the members of The Mother Church." As we ponder the import of these words, errors of impulse, of selfishness, self-indulgence, extravagance, pride, and arrogance will be uncovered in our consciousness, then rebuked and cast out.
