I can see how one who has never been brought under the direct influence of Christian Science, and whose only information regarding its teachings has been gained from those who know no more about it than himself, might not be very favorably impressed by these views; but how any one who has had an opportunity to see the work that is being accomplished in the line of healing and regeneration through Christian Science, can go on his way without stopping at least to investigate, is hard for me to understand. I was brought up in an orthodox church, and at an early age was taken into membership and active work in various departments. After trying for many years to live up to its teachings, there gradually grew up a doubt, till a question of the efficacy of prayer was presented, and being unable to believe the theory advanced, I gradually drifted away; till at last I awoke to the fact that the church was nothing to me, and I had no fixed belief in anything, except that there must be a God and that He must hear and answer prayer.

During the next few years I prayed to this unknown God, but there did not seem to be any answer to my prayers until in the summer of 1907 I had the opportunity of being brought in touch with a living witness of the power of Truth as revealed in Christian Science. This came to me just after two prominent surgeons had told me that an operation for the removal of the appendix was the only thing that would save my life. This witness was a friend who spent a week in our home, and as this was the first real experience I had with a Christian Scientist, the beauty of the spirit manifested changed my views from that of bigoted prejudice to one of respect. On leaving, this friend gave me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, with the request that I read it.

The reading of this book marked a turning-point in my life, for before I had finished reading the chapter on Prayer I was healed of stomach trouble from which I had been suffering for nine years, and before the end of a month I had thrown away glasses that I had worn for fifteen years. The change in my physical condition has been great, and for this I am deeply grateful; but that for which my gratitude knows no bounds is the spiritual uplift and the opening of the Bible as a book for every-day use. I have found a God who is Love, where before I saw only a mighty ruler. I am striving daily by my life to prove my gratitude to God, and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for this wonderful revelation which has been given to us in this age.
