AMONG THE CHURCHES

Located on the corner of Fairview and High streets and opposite the end of Union street, the new Christian Science church will hold a conspicuous place among the public buildings of Winsted. The lot is to be so graded that the proposed building will show the whole front as one looks up Union from Main street to High street. The building is classic in design, and will be semifireproof in construction. The outside dimensions of the edifice are forty by seventy feet, and it will be so located as to leave a lawn of twenty feet on the street sides, with ample space for enlarging in the future, as the plans have been made with that purpose in view. The auditorium will be forty by forty feet floor space, seating two hundred and sixty-six. It is planned by the society to dispose of the dwelling-house now standing on the lot, so they can let the contracts and break ground during the coming summer. The approximate cost of the completed church will probably be about ten thousand dollars.

The building of this church home is the result of the works and growth of Christian Science in Winsted during the past ten years. The first service was held in December, 1900, and Jan. 1, 1901, a few organized into a society. In 1905 rooms were taken in the Wetmore Block, where services are now held. These rooms have proved too small the past few months to meet the needs, and in September, 1910, the society purchased and paid for their present lot on High street, known as the Perkins property. This lot is most centrally located, approached by streets in four directions and surrounded by some of the best houses of the borough.—Winsted Citizen.
