THE LECTURES

A well-known American lecturer and student of Christian Science, the Rev. William P. McKenzie, spoke at some length last night [April 26] on his favorite subject in the Queen's Rooms. There was a large congregation, over which Brown Fleming presided. The lecturer is a member of the Christian Science board of lectureship of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, U. S. A. He has a pleasing personality; slimly built, with refined, clear-cut features, and a good carrying voice.

As might be gathered from his name, the reverend gentleman comes of good Scottish stock. His father—he told his audience last night—was a student of the New College in Edinburgh, and was connected with the Free Church, while his grandfather was pastor of a kirk in a little town on the Border. It was natural, then, that he should follow in the footsteps of his forbears and "wag his pow" in the pulpit. This is his first visit to the land of his race, and he had the opportunity last night of addressing for the first time an audience of Scottish people. It was a pleasant experience for those in the hall to listen to the quiet and convincing manner in which this Scotsman from over the seas told the beautiful story of the Gospels. Like the stock he has come from, he takes matters "cannily." He does not hurry. He gives his congregation plenty of time to assimilate and weigh the arguments which he voices. Naturally, he is an enthusiast regarding the "scientific" treatment, so to speak, of Christianity. His scholarly exposition of the basis upon which Christian Science is founded must have proved convincing to many of those listening to him.

In succinct and interesting fashion he traced the development of this cult, showing how "healing" was the great factor in the lives of it followers, and also how they derived that wonderful power from studying and thoroughly understanding the works of Christ. "Healing," in Mr. McKenzie's eloquent phrase, was the golden thread which could be traced in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and which to those who understood served to knit the whole into one great and glorious pean of harmony. He told the life-story of Mrs. Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, of her wonderful experience in being healed by faith when lying on her death-bed, as was thought; and also referred in most interesting detail to many other cases, all of which effectively demonstrated the thoroughness and efficacy of scientific understanding of the works of Jesus and the prophets of old.
