A PROMISE

And their works do follow them.—Rev. xiv.13.

"Their works do follow them." John, loved of him
Who taught as only thought inspired can teach,
Charged these few words with warning power to reach
Beyond the rippling sound of shallow speech
Or flow of years, a tidal wave to rim
Time's tossing sea and beat upon the beach.

"Their works do follow them." Mere change of scene
Transforms no savage to a gownsman staid.
'Tis thus our works shall follow, undelayed,—
Pursue us with their methods habit-made.
O sermon! be they lofty deeds or mean,
These works that follow when earth-concepts fade.
