REFLECTION

Some time ago, while passing along one of the Swiss lakes at the sunset hour, I witnessed a scene radiantly lovely. On the opposite shore Mt. Rigi rose in majestic winter whiteness against the evening sky, whose golden glory was slowly changing into a mellow glow of crimson, while in the distance other mountains, most of them snowcapped, lay in a soft flush of color. It was clearly evident that the highest peaks were the most radiant because of their whiteness and the fact that they reflected the most light.

This seemed to illustrate the thought that as individual consciousness rises in the scale of understanding, in the clear atmosphere of divine Mind, like the mountain peak it will be clad in purity, and in proportion to its purity be imbued with and reflect Truth. There was also a thought to be gleaned from the calm, clear lake, which reflected the wonders of sky and mountains so accurately that it seemed to consist of nothing but reflection, in the presence of which the water was imperceptible. In viewing this I could but think of the water as typifying the belief of matter vanishing before the clear reflection of substance, and recalling these lines by Mrs. Eddy: "Thought will finally be understood and seen in all form, substance, and color, but without material accompaniments" (Science and Health, p. 310). 'Tis true this scene bore only the nature of the symbolical, but in pondering it I could but echo our Leader's words, "I love your promise" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 87), and give thanks for some measure of understanding of Truth, as revealed in Christian Science, which had so enhanced this evening vista.
