THE CALL TO OBEDIENCE

In the parable of the unjust steward Jesus made use of this expression: "The children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light." Recently, while pondering these words, I recalled the time when I was in bondage to material sense,—when materia medica made one law, hygiene another, and selfishness still another. These so-called laws were closely observed, because fear of suffering impelled obedience to their seeming dictates.

Students of Christian Science have been given by their Leader certain rules and by-laws which, if obeyed, make their journey out of the bondage of evil into the freedom of Truth more safe and sure. One of these by-laws in the Manual of The Mother Church (Article VIII., Sect. 6) directs our attention lovingly and plainly to an important duty. As I considered the saying of Jesus quoted above, the query came, Are you awake to the importance of perfect obedience to a method which your watchful Leader sees is most important, or are you less alert and wise than you were when seeking good in the realm of material sense?

Our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," teaches that man's birthright is conscious unity with good, God. How can we better lay claim to that birthright, which utilized will bring us and all mankind into happiness and harmony, than by watchful endeavor to be alive to the importance of implicit obedience to the Master's loving admonition: "Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."
