On Oct. 1, 1900, while in South Africa, my left ankle...
On Oct. 1, 1900, while in South Africa, my left ankle was seriously injured by a shell. The ankle became quite stiff and was said to be ossified. For four years I tried materia medica and was greatly helped by it, but the doctors told me that I could not march any more and that nothing further could be done. In 1904 I tried Christian Science, and began to improve immediately. I have been enabled to do my work, even to the marching of twenty miles or more, and although not yet completely healed I know that the fault is not in the Principle. I have had many demonstrations of the power of divine Love, such as no ill effects after concussion (keeping to my work the next day), recovery from influenza, protection when in apparent danger, etc. I tried hard to keep the habit of smoking, but the desire for both tobacco and intoxicating drinks left me.
All this is, however, nothing as compared with the spiritual uplifting of thought which Christian Science is giving me. I am beginning to see the depths to which selfish thoughts and lack of self-restraint can lower one, for it is only when we begin to look upward that we see how deep down we have fallen. The truth of Jesus' statement, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God," is made clear, and I know that when my thoughts are made purer by the overcoming of selfishness, irritability, etc., I shall see more of God and less of evil, whether under the name of sin or sickness. The true man is a ray from divine Love, and it would be as easy for a ray of sunlight to reflect darkness as for a ray of divine Love to reflect evil. To be truly healed we must seek the spiritual kingdom more than the physical benefit of healing, for then we look beyond the false evidence of human belief to the glorious purity revealed by spiritual understanding, attained through the study of Science and Health.
I cannot find words to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for giving us this "Key to the Scriptures," and I often wonder where and what I should be now if she had not been faithful to her call to duty and given to the world this glorious revelation of Truth.
