THE LECTURES
The Rev. Arthur R. Vosburgh of Rochester, N. Y., lectured on Christian Science in Queen's Hall, London, last Thursday and Friday [Nov. 11 and 12]. Philip Martineau, who presided at the lecture, said:—
I have been interested in Christian Science for over nine years. I came to it for physical healing, and obtained it. I was not content to leave matters there. I wanted to find out for myself why and how I had been healed, and I determined to study the subject for myself. I can only tell you that I was well repaid, and am very grateful for the help I received through that study. In those nine years I have had opportunities of meeting many earnest workers in this movement, and many who have been healed both physically and morally; and, when one sees for oneself and knows what Christian Science has done for these people, it is impossible to doubt the truth of their healing. There are many here tonight in this hall who, if there were time, could tell you the plain unvarnished facts of their healing. These people are not fanatical, not hysterical, but sane, intelligent men and women, strong in their convictions and with a full sense of their obligations to each other and their responsibilities to their country. This experience has forced me to the conclusion—and I should not be standing on this platform if it were not so—that where Christian Science is honestly and conscientiously lived and practised, it is silently, quietly, and surely doing a great work of regeneration, not only in the individual, but in the whole body politic, for it stands for all that is best and highest and noblest in life. But all great movements for reform have, all down the ages, evoked opposition, and Christian Science is no exception to this rule. There has been bitter and hostile criticism of it, much misrepresentation and misunderstanding, sometimes wilful, but more often, I believe, through ignorance of its teachings and purpose. Christian Science does not fear honest investigation; it courts it.—Christian Commonwealth.
