AMONG THE CHURCHES

First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Sixteenth and Wall streets, will be formally dedicated at this morning's services [Jan. 2], the last dollar of indebtedness against the building having been paid within the past week.

The church was completed and the first services held on March 5, 1906. Prior to that date the congregation, which was organized in December, 1897, has slowly but surely grown. They first held their services on the second floor at 620 Main street. In 1899 a state charter was granted to the organization, which had increased in numbers until its original accommodations were inadequate. For the next two years services were held at Odd Fellows' hall, corner of Seventh and Main streets, after which the church home was established in the Windsor building. In 1904 the necessity for a permanent church home was recognized, and lots at Sixteenth and Wall streets were purchased and the work of construction begun. Eighteen months later the building was finished at a cost of thirty-five thousand dollars.—Joplin Globe.
