Christian Science has been such a great help to me in...

Christian Science has been such a great help to me in business that perhaps my experience may encourage some other woman, who, like myself, goes out daily into the workaday world, feeling often like a mere atom among the toiling thousands in our big cities. Naturally timid and retiring, it was very hard for me to go out into the business world; but I wished not only to be self-supporting, instead of a burden on my brothers, but to be able to help others. I decided to learn stenography, although in the opinion of my family and friends I was not strong enough for a business life, as I had always been rather delicate and easily tired out, with backaches, headaches, and severe attacks of throat trouble almost every winter.

When I completed my course and took my first position (we were then living in Chicago), it was about as terrifying to me to go into an office as if it were an ogre's castle, and although that feeling wore off, and I got along nicely, I really stayed in this position very much longer than I should,—after having advanced as far as I could go there,—through the dread of starting out to find another place and encounter new work and new people. I then knew nothing of Christian Science, but while there heard of it, came across some literature, met one or two who were interested in it, and finally got a copy of Science and Health and began to read it. Much of it I did not understand, and I would often lay it aside for some time; but I could not get away from it, and parts of it would interest me greatly, especially the possibilities that it held out to me of growing stronger, of being all that I desired to be, of conquering faults in disposition, of banishing fear, and of gaining a better understanding of God. I began to realize that because God is omnipresent, good is all present and there is in reality no evil, and that was a wonderful relief; also to know that omnipotence really means all-power and nothing less. So I came into Science, not through direct healing, but by growing more and more interested in it, and by finding that it was gradually making me stronger and happier and helping me in every way.

It was finally decided at home that I should leave my position and take up the study of designing, which I had always wanted to do, and I did so, spending some time in this way, until circumstances changed so that I was confronted with the problem of which was the better thing to do, go on with my studies or return to business. I could not decide, and going down town one morning with a friend who was a Scientist, I mentioned my perplexity to her. She said, "Don't try to decide. God knows what you should do. Leave it to Him, and He will show you." That seemed rather strange to me, as I had always thought I had to make the decision, even when asking for wisdom and help. But the advice seemed so restful that I decided to try it, and every time the perplexity would come up I would put it aside with the thought that God knew and would show me. Later on, when it was about time for the decision, I was offered a very desirable position in an office, so took that as the answer to my problem, and found the place very pleasant.
