Three years ago I was in a state bordering on despair. I had suffered for years with stomach, bowel, and liver affections, also with terrible headaches, which were becoming worse and more frequent, and was so weak and miserable that life seemed not worth the living. One doctor whom I consulted thought there was no help for me. Another told me he thought he could help me, and I did recover somewhat and seemed to sleep a little better, but continued to suffer from the headaches and was obliged to confine myself to a very limited diet, although I remained under his care over a year and a half.
In May, 1909, a kind friend placed in my hands some Christian Science literature. I had heard of this teaching before, but had no faith in it for myself. In fact, I felt somewhat prejudiced against it, as do many others who have formed their opinions from the statements of those who know little or nothing about it. I, however, became interested at once in the literature. The testimonies inspired me with hope, and that wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, how eagerly I devoured its pages, never questioning or doubting even where I could not understand. I read and reread, always finding some new truth or gaining a clearer understanding of one already recognized. This book is indeed a "Key to the Scriptures," and I read the Bible with a new vision, realizing that its promises are for us here and now, and the words of an old hymn came to me,—
