"THE DIVINE LAW OF LOVE"

WRITING of those systems of mental practice which are not Christian Science and which are opposed to its teachings, Mrs. Eddy says: "My contest is not with the individual, but with the false system. I love mankind, and shall continue to labor and endure" (Science and Health, p. 99). In these two short sentences she has given her followers a rule of Christian conduct which they will find invaluable in every way, and from which they must not depart if they wish to be Christian Scientists.

The way of the world has been to wage war upon persons, but the way of Christ is far different, and is pointed out by Mrs. Eddy on page 30 of Science and Health in these words: "Rabbi and priest taught the Mosaic law, which said: 'An eye for an eye,' and 'Whose sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed.' Not so did Jesus, the new executor for God, present the divine law of Love, which blesses even those that curse it."

If all mankind were to take home to themselves these sayings, and make them their guide in their intercourse with their fellows, the record of wars and murders, of "man's inhumanity to man," would soon become a thing of the past, and the brotherhood of man would more readily appear. Slowly perhaps, but surely, the practical demonstration of the teachings of Christian Science is ushering in that blessed era when men shall regard it but their "reasonable service," as the apostle Paul admonishes, that they "be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;" and this notwithstanding that some of those who have named the name of Christian Science appear to forget at times these teachings, with which they should be as familiar as they are with their own names.
