[Written for the Sentinel.]

OMNIPOTENCE

ABOVE the battle's din and mortal fray,
Love holds its own;
Amid beliefs that mock and cloud our day,
Mind rules alone.

Across our path, dark error's shadows fall;
Fear seemeth real;
We scarce can see the sun which, conquering all,
God's truths reveal.

Hearts warped and weary with the fruitless strife
And fears of men,
Must needs draw near the very Life of life,
For peace again.

Then error pales; for in the deepest night
God reigns supreme;
His watchful care, redeeming earth with light,
Dispels the dream.

All power unto me is giv'n, Christ saith,
In heaven and earth.
Let understanding bloom from timid faith,
And truth have birth!
