Because Christian Science denies that there is any real...
Transvaal (Johannesburg, South Africa) Leader
Because Christian Science denies that there is any real entity or substance outside of Spirit and spiritual existence, it should not be assumed that it denies man's existence. On the contrary, it ennobles our concept of man and frees us from many of the limitations which are part and parcel of mortal man's existence. Christian Science does indeed deny power to the human will, but what Christian is there who can object to the doctrine that ascribes all power to the divine Mind? It was Paul who said: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
Christian Science has been called "transcendental mysticism." On the contrary it is the simplest and most rational statement of Christ's theology, If Christian Science is mistaken for transcendental mysticism it is because its spiritual message is not understood. Referring to the pharisaical inability to understand the primitive Christian doctrines, Paul said: "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen . . . the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty."
Your correspondent's surmise that a Christian Scientist regards himself as a "God-intoxicated man," is as untrue as is his speculation that the Christian Scientist is often "drunk with self." The Christian Scientist is engaged in working out his salvation according to Scriptural command, and the process he is endeavoring with some success to realize with Paul that neither height nor depth nor any other creature can separate him from the love of God. This consciousness of God's presence and man's unity with God is different from the grossly materialistic concept of the writer of the article under discussion.
