About three years ago, when Christian Science first...
About three years ago, when Christian Science first found me, I was a hopeless wreck. I had been under the care of doctors for the year previous, had undergone three operations, and at that time was preparing to return to the hospital for my fourth operation, with no hope of ever being well. A friend of my husband told him of some of the wonderful good which Christian Science was doing for those would come and drink of the fountain of life, and he asked my husband to take me to a practitioner. After three weeks spent in trying to decide which to do,—return to the doctors and the knife, commit suicide and, as I then thought, "end it all," or try Christian Science,—I did, as all who are wise should do; I turned to God and was healed.
One of my troubles was called by the doctors a serious case of milk-leg. I had been ordered by one of the best specialists of New York city to wear a rubber stocking. This I had worn seven months, the doctors saying that I could never leave it off without losing the entire use of the limb. However, after three treatments in Christian Science, I removed the stocking, and have never worn it since. My other troubles were mostly internal, and of a serious nature, and the healing went on slowly for nearly four months, after which I was well. At one time I was healed of hemorrhages in one absent treatment. How we rejoiced, and how we have loved the Christian Science teachings ever since. Though the healing seemed slow, now I thank God for it, for during that time the spiritual uplifting was more to me than all the physical healing. The Bible is a new book to me, and since the spring of 1907 my progress in the way of Truth has been more rapid. Each day brings more and better proofs of the ever-presence of divine Love, and my joy can never be expressed in words, that each day I can help some one, even in the smallest degree, out of the bondage of sin or sickness.
To our revered Leader my heart goes out with love untold. I know that only a life lived in the truth she has so nobly brought to light again can ever repay her for the pure and earnest efforts she has put forth to bring all who are in darkness to see and love the Life that "maketh all things new." My prayer is to be worthy to bear the name of a Christian Scientist.
