About six years ago, after studying Science and Health...
About six years ago, after studying Science and Health for several years as best I could, and knowing that wonderful healing was done by Christian Science, it occurred to me to try to help myself in the case of my hands, which had troubled me for twenty-seven years. The doctors called it a skin disease, and I suffered very much from it. Many remedies were tried, but nothing seemed to do any good. At first I did not realize the importance of relying only upon spiritual means, but applied different material remedies. As I did not get along very well that way, it came to me finally that I should trust to God alone to heal me, and so I did. One day when my hands were hurting me dreadfully, so that I hardly knew what to do, the temptation came to use material means, but I said, No, I am going to trust God to heal me now, even if I suffer more than ever in the trial. Then the temptation came to use just a little sweet cream, but I resisted it as before, and I continued to do so, going down on my knees and asking God to help me. And the help soon came! My hands grew less painful, I went to bed and slept, and woke up in the night to find that they did not hurt. By the next night they were smooth, and I thanked God with a full heart.
My hands have never troubled me since, but this is only one of many experiences for which I have reason to thank God since I have learned of Christian Science. My grandmother in Holland was a very religious woman, and her faith accomplished healing long ago. She passed from human view forty years ago, but I never ceased to long for her faith. When Christian Science came to me, about ten years ago, it seemed to me I had found that faith; and more than this, an understanding of how it is that the truth heals. I have been very happy trying to live Christian Science ever since. A friend is writing this for me, as I cannot write the English language with proper spelling, and still speak it brokenly.
