I became interested in Christian Science about eighteen...
I became interested in Christian Science about eighteen months ago. It was through suffering that I was led to this blessed religion. I had serious eye trouble for a little over a year, and prior to my first treatment in Christian Science I had been treated by the best oculist in the State. For one year I could not read the headlines in the daily newspapers, even with the glasses which the oculist had prescribed. I was almost desperate, as I suffered constantly. I had a good position as traveling salesman, but knew if relief was not obtained soon it meant that I would lose my position. While I was not antagonistic to Christian Science, I supposed that it was some kind of a "faith cure," and consequently did not give it a second thought. Later I met a Christian Science practitioner, and while in conversation with her she very kindly said, "When you find that you can get no relief from the oculist, try Christian Science." The next week, while at a hotel, a fellow traveling man asked me why I did not try Christian Science. Although I do not even know the gentleman's name, I shall always feel grateful to him for mentioning Christian Science to me at this time, as the earnest way in which he told me of his experience, how he had been healed in Christian Science of a rheumatic trouble, appealed to me.
The next week I called on the practitioner who had first spoken of Christian Science to me, and told her that while I did not know anything about this religion, I was ready to try it. After she had given me a treatment I asked how Christian Scientists claimed to heal the sick. She replied that it was in the same way that Jesus and his disciples healed eighteen hundred years ago. This was just the answer I wanted to hear, and I believed it! While I had been a member of an orthodox church for thirty years, I had never been thoroughly satisfied; in fact, I think I was drifting away from what it taught. I had repeatedly asked why miracles (as I called them) were not performed now, for I reasoned that God was surely the same,—as the Scriptures tell us,—"yesterday, and to day, and for ever." My healing was not instantaneous, and I am glad that it was gradual, as it caused me to get down the old Bible that looked almost new to me, and with Science and Health as a "Key to the Scriptures" a new light was given me, a new understanding of the sacred book.
While the healing of my eyes seems almost wonderful, yet it is not to be compared to the comfort and the satisfaction that Christian Science has given me in showing me the real man, the spiritual man; and what a difference between belief and understanding! Once I believed; now I know! I know because I have proved the truth, just the same as if I had demonstrated a problem in mathematics. The result has been so accurate, so satisfactory, that I thank God every day of my life for revealing through Christian Science as taught by our Leader, the true interpretation of man. I have been benefited in many ways by the truth. One troublesome ailment was sore throat, which meant a medical expense every winter. I have been able to overcome this, not having had any trouble in that line for over a year. I am very grateful for even the slight understanding I have of Science. I have discarded all medicine and depend on Christian Science entirely to free me from all discord that may present itself.—J. Scott Walker, Troy, O.
