I would like to express my gratitude for Christian Science...
I would like to express my gratitude for Christian Science by telling what it has done for me. When I was only three years old I was taken with rheumatic trouble, and from that time until I was twelve I had attacks every winter. The winter I was twelve my heart became affected, and I was placed under a doctor's care. After three months' struggle I seemed perfectly well, but the third winter I took a very severe cold, the heart trouble reappeared, and I found myself down in bed again. This time I did not improve, but became so ill that the doctor did not know anything else to do than to give stimulants. Then I began to have distressing attacks, and suffered in this way six months, when the doctor said that I must be sent to a lower altitude, as we were then living in Denver. My family moved with me to California, and here I seemed to get much better in some ways, but the attacks still clung to me, and I still resorted to drugs for relief. At last the drug-taking became such a habit that I could not get rid of it. I was never without a special remedy for these attacks for a minute day or night in five years, and used it sometimes as often as every fifteen minutes.
I had been urged by a friend to try Christian Science when the heart trouble first developed, but I was not ready for it then and my family would not hear of it. When a friend who is a doctor visited us less than two years ago, he told me to be careful not to take too much of this particular medicine, at the same time saying that he could do nothing for me, and this frightened me so that I made up my mind to try Christian Science. My family, seeing no hope in any other direction, consented to my doing so. I began to go to church and attended all the mid-week meetings, and finally got help from a practitioner. The fear was so great that it was nearly four weeks before I was able to discard the drug altogether, although I tried hard to be obedient and the practitioner worked with me faithfully, both silently and audibly. At the end of that time, however, I was able to throw the drug away, and have not taken a drop of medicine since. It is now more than a year since this freedom was realized, and my family are all rejoicing in my release and give full credit to Christian Science. My mother and I are regualr attendants at the services here, and have made good demonstrations for ourselves. We are striving to show something of our gratitude to Principle, and to our dear Leader, by obedence and by reflecting love.—Inez K. Stuart, Long Beach, Cal.
