Berkshire (Mass.) Eagle

A circle of students of the teaching and practice of Christian Science gathers every evening at the North Family (Shaker settlement, Mt. Lebanon, N. Y.), for the study of the Lessons, and copies of Science and Health are as plentiful as blackberries in August. A friend who saw some of the work accomplished here last summer and became interested, a retired New York merchant well and widely known in business and high social circles, a man of culture and habits of careful and thoughtful reading, writes: "So far as I can judge, the entire system is based upon the Bible, and requires from its adherents the most rigid adherence to the highest standard of Christian and Christlike morals. Thus far I have failed to find anything in their articles of faith that would prevent their being adopted by any professed Christian or Christian church. Certainly I am filled with amazement that one woman could formulate it. It is worthy of a synod of churchmen. 'By their fruits ye shall know them.' The test of a religion or a religious faith must ever be, Does it make nobler, better, and more moral, Godfearing men and women? Certainly this new faith cannot be viewed in any other light, by those competent to judge it by systems that have preceded it, past and present."
