That "man's extremity is God's opportunity," was proven...
That "man's extremity is God's opportunity," was proven in my case. It was only as a last resort, and to please my friends, that I consented to try Christian Science for the cure of the liquor habit. I had used liquor for a number of years in a social way, but believed—like many others—that I was master of the desire, until I discovered that I had become a victim of the habit. Through will-power alone I would stop for a week or two, only to return to it more of a slave than ever. I experienced all the misery and suffering which follows the victim of this evil,—I was reduced to a moral, physical, and financial wreck; I lost my home and friends, and was considered a hopeless case.
When I was told that I could be healed through Christian Science, I did not believe it; but knowing that the prayers of the Christian Scientist could do me no harm, I went, though very reluctantly, with my sister, who was hopeful of my healing, to see a practitioner in Washington, D. C. I was given a treatment, but did not feel that anything had been done for me, and was disappointed and discouraged; this indicating a certain amount of faith of which I had been unconscious. But on the following day I went again for treatment, and on the way to the practitioner's home I met an old friend, who insisted I should drink with him; which I did, and then continued on my way. I was asked if I had been tempted, and was told that I would not drink any more. On the third day before the treatment was over I realized that I had been healed. I continued treatment, however, for two weeks, and having been asked if I had any physical ills to be destroyed, I replied that I had one, but that Christian Science could not reach it, as I had suffered from hernia for seventeen years and was compelled to wear a heavy steel truss. At the end of the two weeks, almost without realizing it, I was healed of this physical ill also. I left off the truss, and to-day am strong and have splendid health. I was also cured of the use of tobacco, and during the first year after I came into Christian Science I was healed of two attacks of acute illness. The constant value of Christian Science to the business man, in enabling him to solve his problems and master his difficulties, if obedient ot its rules, is inestimable.
I am very grateful to God for my healing, and for giving to us our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who through Christian Science is showing us how to avail ourselves of the truth that makes us free. I am indeed grateful that I was healed and given my first glimpse of the truth, and also for the spiritual uplifting and the privilege of helping others.
