During the past winter I had an experience which clearly shows the power of Truth as revealed in Christian Science. I was on my way to the Wednesday night meeting, when suddenly I felt a terrible sense of pain in the back, and I became entirely helpless. I feared that I would fall, and looked at a fence which was near me with the thought that if I could only lean against it the terrible pain could be borne, but not one step could I take. I would be glad if I could truthfully say that I immediately realized God's love and power, but I was so frightened and bewildered that I began to totter, when like a flash of light came our Leader's beautiful words in Science and Health, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Pref., p. vii.). I was roused from my lethargy and began to realize that as God's child no evil could happen to me; then I found I could move my feet a little, and instead of trying to lean on the fence for support I leaned on God, and with His help managed to walk, although slowly, to the church, and when the services were over I was entirely free from pain. I walked home, a distance of five blocks, with perfect ease. I remembered that many years ago my mother was attacked suddenly just as I had been. She was lifted into bed and the family physician attended her for several weeks, diagnosing the disease as sciatic trouble.

The Bible is replete with promises of help to those who put their trust in God, but we never seemed to make a practical use of these promises until our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, realized the great truths of Christian Science through God's gift of spiritual understanding; and thousands of people all over the world have been lifted from beds of suffering, from the thraldom of sinful habits, and brought into the glorious freedom of God's children. What a debt of gratitude we owe her! She has shown us a way through the tangled wilderness of error, so that we no longer are bound in the chains of sin and suffering, and the least we can do is to be loyal to the divine Principle of Christian Science and to our Leader, knowing that she is guided alone by God.
