"CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS AND JURY DUTY."

In an editorial in the Sentinel of July 20 we quoted a newspaper item in which it was alleged that a Christian Scientist in Chicago had been excused from jury duty upon his representation that it would be inconsistent with his religion for him to serve as a juror. We were glad to receive a letter from "our friend in Chicago" in which he explained that the report was erroneous; that he served his full term as a juror and received pay therefor. It seems that there were several cases pending against a corporation with which he had recently preferred and settled a claim for damages; and it was for this reason that he was excused from serving as a juror in these cases, and not because he was a Christian Scientist. What we said about the civic duties of Christian Scientists is in no wise affected by the fact that the report about this juror was untrue, and we are much pleased to find that our views on this subject are highly commended by Christian Scientists in general.
