There are a certain number of opponents of christian Science who seem to labor under the impression that the constant reiteration of strings of offensive adjectives constitutes criticism. Thus a critic. in your issue of the 31st of August last, describes Science and Health as "crude, ill-expressed. and contradictory;" while another author, of world-wide reputation, who believes himself to be quite as much in opposition as this critic. has been describing it as "wise and sane and elevated and lucid and compact. " Unanimity. if I may be permitted to adapt a phrase from Shakespeare, is manifestly not the badge of all their tribe.

Then the critic refers to the correspondence in the Daily Telegraph. and informs your readers that the writers of the letters in that paper against Christian Science are better fitted to deal with Christian Science than Mrs. Eddy. That, I may point out. is the sort of argument which has done duty in similar circumstances from the day Tertullus described Paul to Felix as "a pestilent fellow." The argument is not. however, one which carries conviction. for it is easliy understood that by accepting your own premises as proved there is nothing to prevent your arriving, theoretically. at any conclusion you may wish. At the same time the person who best understands Science and Health is the person who. through the understanding of the power of God. heals sorrow and sin and all manner of sickness most efficaciously.
