For over twenty years I endeavored to get rid of the liquor habit, but it continually grew upon me until it seemed to be my master. At this juncture, when I was at my worst, a lady who was a Christian Scientist began to take an interest in me. This was at Victorville, San Bernardino County, Cal., some twelve years ago. As I did not believe that anything could cure me, she had a very stubborn case, but after absent treatment at intervals for several months (the lady had moved to another place). I began to feel the effect of the truth. Formerly I could not come to town without drinking constantly, but on a visit at a time when I made the sale of some mining property, and when I dreaded to come in for fear of the usual consequences, to my great surprise I found that I had lost all desire for liquor, and from that day to this I have no desire for it. I was a greatly surprised man. as were many others, who had expected to reap a rich harvest out of my shortcomings. If my acknowledgment will help some other poor unfortunate, I shall feel thoroughly compensated for making it. This was not the only thing that Christian Science accomplished in my case. I was rather vindictive when I supposed an injury had been done me, but this has entirely disappeared. I now think people who try to injure others are themselves the sufferers. I also had the fear of eating many things, but now I eat anything that is set before me without fear of suffering. I wish to return my thanks thus publicly at this late date for what Christian Science has done in healing me, as well as for the teaching of the truth formulated by Mrs. Eddy in all her works. She has the good wishes of all right-thinking people at the present time. We remember what Jesus endured to save sinners.
