I was cured without medicine of what is known as exophthalmic goiter in 1897, through the teachings of Christian Science. For two years previous to this I was very ill from this disease, and as if that were not enough for one poor mortal to bear, a floating kidney was added, together with insomnia. It is needless to say that everything in the line of materia medica was done for me. I would get a little stronger at times, but would soon fall back again, till in the summer of 1897 I felt I could not live through another fall.
In the latter part of August, of that year, I met two students of Christian Science. At this time I knew nothing of its teachings. Seeing my condition, they spoke of the healing work of Christian Science and what it had done for them. I was then a member of an orthodox church in New York, and had taught one of its Bible classes for ten years, so naturally I asked many questions as to their interpretation of certain verses in the Bible. I had determined that if the healing did not rest on the Bible, I would have nothing to do with it. Their answers showed me they had a clearer understanding of the Scriptures than I had, so in a few days I said to one of the Scientists that I was willing to be helped. I gave up my many medicines without a struggle. I had a week's present treatment and four weeks absent treatment. The first symptom to disappear was the sense of discouragement; I felt I was going to get well. In the mean time I had bought a copy of Science and Health, the text-book of Christian Science, and was reading earnestly for myself. At the end of five weeks, when I again saw this "Good Samaritan," I was very much better in every way, but not well. I supposed she would continue the treatments, but she said, "You are so much improved, I think you can do the rest of the work yourself;" so through the following fall and winter I slowly worked out of the remaining conditions by the earnest study of the Bible and our text-book. In the following spring I was in a normal condition and able to ride a bicycle.
I am greatly indebted to Christian Science for the many blessings that have come to me and to my home through its illuminating interpretation of the Bible; it is indeed the pearl of great price. Surely the psalmist sang truly, "The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea."
