An Answer to Criticisms

Pittsburg (Pa.) Despatch

Christian Scientists do not pray directly for material things. They follow the teaching of the Master. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." They know that they are always in need of more goodness, though they may not know just what they need materially; therefore, their task is to do good and trust God for a just reward.

Christian Science treatment does not consist merely in a "denial of any need." It involves, first, a recognition of one's sins; second, repentance; third, reformation effected and sustained by the power of God.

Christian Scientists believe that bodily healing is a consequence of spiritual regeneration, so that healing the sick is secondary to the healing of sin and dependent upon it. While Scientists differ from some others in their understanding of the nature of sin and disease, they none the less recognize that these exist in erring mortals and must be grappled with and overcome in God's way.
