Our baby boy, now two years old, was born strong and healthy, to all appearances, and so he continued to be for six months, at which time a great change occurred, and without any known physical cause. The ailments developed rapidly, and to such an alarming extent that we soon came to feel that the case was what would ordinarily be called hopeless.

The child appeared to be partly paralyzed, and we discovered later that he had spinal and hip disease; also disease of the joints of the arms and legs. He suffered great pain, as was evidenced by his constant wailing night and day, and by his screaming when moved in any way whatever. Soon, however, he became too weak to scream, but little gasps and the expression of his face told of the agony he suffered, which wrung our hearts. He had the best of care, and medical attention was given by several physicians to determine whether any possible fracture or dislocation had been sustained, but nothing of this nature could be discovered. The physician who conducted an X-ray examination realized the seriousness of the case, however, and said he hoped the child would recover, but we thought we read in his countenance that he really had no such hope; and now the child seemed beyond relief, and we fully expected, as did our neighbors, to see our darling die.

We had, however, known about Christian Science for some years, through relatives living in a distant State, and although we had little or no faith in its efficacy in the treatment of organic disease, we resolved to give it a trial as a forlorn hope. We promised each other to carry out faithfully this resolution, and not to be influenced by our fears to resort to the use of drugs.
