I was an invalid for almost seven years before I knew...
I was an invalid for almost seven years before I knew anything about Christian Science. I had taken medicine and been under doctors' treatment without permanent benefit until I had almost lost confidence in them all. Five years ago I was confined to my bed, as I had been several times before with female trouble, and a physician did all he could for me, but I did not get well under his treatment, and sometimes it seemed to me that I could never be up again. In the mean time, one of our neighbors brought me a Christian Science Journal and asked me to read it, and another brought the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and read to me from it. My hope was then renewed, for I believed that in God's own way and in His own time He would make me strong and well. The "way" was pointed out to me then and there through Christian Science, and one day while feeling worse I asked my mother to go and borrow Science and Health that I might read and find out more about it. I sat propped up in bed and read several pages, and became so interested that the more I read the more I wanted to read. Soon after this I quit taking medicine of any kind, while before I was always taking it and was sick most of the time, hardly able to do anything; but after reading and putting into practice what I learned. I felt better and was able to do more. Indigestion and constipation were overcome and I quit wearing glasses for weak eyes, although the oculist who examined my eyes had said that I would have to wear them as long as I lived.
I married about a year and a half ago and moved away where there are no Christian Scientists living near me, but I have my own copy of Science and Health, and other Christian Science literature, and am trying to live according to its teaching. I can never give up what has benefited me so much, although I have had many battles to fight with error,—both sin and sickness. I find that God will help those who try to help themselves, and that His grace is sufficient for me. I am clinging to what I know about Christian Science, and trying to gain a better understanding of it.—Clem Simmons, Greenfield, Tenn.
