Until about three years ago, I suffered from frequent attacks of rheumatism, which were sometimes so severe that I could hardly walk. My mother and brother had been Christian Scientists for a long time, but I had never taken the trouble to investigate this truth. I could not then see how there could be anything in it, and so had always refused offers of help. An attack more severe than usual, seemed to settle in and stiffen the muscles of my neck, so that I could not turn my head. The prophet said, "But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction." So I bore the pain for about two months, but finally in my misery I accepted treatment from my mother, although I did not have much faith that it would do me any good. The healing was slow, but in about six weeks I was entirely relieved, and have never had a return of the trouble since, although I have been exposed to all kinds of weather.
I was then ready to know more of what had helped me, and commenced reading the Bible and Science and Health, and studying the Lesson-Sermons daily. My progress seemed slow at first, but I have been richly rewarded for every effort I have made to know something of Christian Science. I now have a satisfying religion, and have been helped in many ways. I have had the gratification of proving for myself that God is very near to us, and ever ready to help us if we but surrender our human will and false beliefs for eternal Truth. In comparing my present state of mind with that of three years ago, I am indeed grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her wonderful writings, which are within the reach of every one. If in the past our heavenly Father has had compassion on us, while we were yet a great way off, how much more may we hope for help in our progress, if we are faithful and obedient.—Willet G. Ranney, Cleveland, O.
