As we grow into a realization of the protective power of...
As we grow into a realization of the protective power of Love, fear which "hath torment" leaves us, and we rest in peace and safety. This was brought home to me last summer in a very beautiful and convincing way. We had in the early part of the summer many severe electric storms. Our summer home being in the midst of the pine woods, we seemed to feel the force of these storms usually. One day such a storm came upon us as I was giving our little boy his supper. My first thought was one of fear, as the lightning and thunder were most startling and almost constant. The little lad sat in my lap, absolutely unconscious of any discord, and looked up at me with perfect trust and love. Immediately a sense of the protection of divine Love came over me, and I thought that as my little boy felt perfect security in my arms and knew no fear, so was I and every member of my family safe in the arms of infinite Love. Hardly had this thought come to me, when a blinding flash and deafening crash seemed to shake the house to its foundations, but all sense of fear had vanished. I was not even startled, nor was my little boy.
Very shortly after, I learned that the house had been struck; that a ball of fire had entered the room downstairs, where four members of the family were gathered around the table, and that it had burst directly over the table with tremendous force, so that for a moment all of them were blinded. But immediately, when the quiet came, it was found that not one had been harmed in any way, and my father, who is not a Christian Scientist, said to me afterwards, "It is strange, but do you know that I did not feel afraid."
Is it not beautiful that Christian Science teaches us what it means to dwell "in the secret place of the most High"?
