As Little Children
"Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." Advanced thinkers have ever recognized the truth thus simply and forcefully stated by Jesus, and they have expressed their concepts of it in accordance with their different view-points of life. How the loving, beautiful, pure, childlike thought appealed to Jesus, and indeed how it appeals to all.
Love is reflected in proportion to purity of thought. We should not love people, but rather the good they manifest or reflect. In the loving humility of little children is the answer of the prayer, "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors." The only practical way it can be answered is in accordance with the spiritual sense, "And infinite Love is reflected in love" (Science and Health, p. I7). Great is the wisdom of our Leader's statement, that "we can hardly afford to be miserable for the faults of others," and that "he who can wilfully attempt to injure another, is an object of pity rather than of resentment" (Miscellaneous Writings,p.224).
Much indeed do we need and desire the child's beautiful concept of the fatherhood and motherhood of God which destroys all fear. "Perfect love casteth out fear." The child, reflecting much Love, manifests little fear. An incident with which the writer is familiar illustrates this: A mother and her three little children were staying alone in a house that was quite isolated from neighbors. During the night a terrific thunder-storm came on. The wind moaning through the trees, together with the almost continuous roar of thunder and the sharp flashes of lightning, brought consternation to the heart of the mother, who aroused the children and gathered them about her. At the height of the storm the eldest child, about seven years of age, looked up to her and said, "Mamma, we needn't be afraid, don't you remember that little verse,—
