Discharging our Indebtedness

In Christian Science we understand that God's children are free born, heirs to His kingdom, "joint-heirs with Christ," therefore not indebted to any one, inasmuch as the kingdom of heaven is theirs by Divine right.

This statement admitted, we are called upon to prove our claim, by learning to obey the first commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." To material sense, however, we are mortgaged, "body and soul," to mortal mind, and are subject to all its laws of limitation; but as this mortal mind is only a counterfeit of immortal Mind, the debt must be seen as invalid. This recognition is the first step toward the discharging of our indebtedness, and the very easiest one. Our active work is to destroy in consciousness the false claims of material sense; namely, envy, pride, hatred, malice, dishonesty, self-will, self-righteousness, uncharitableness; in a word, all the delusions and illusions of mortal mind that would becould our title to our spiritual estate,—our true heritage,—for to the extent that we do entertain in consciousness this false array of thought, are we in bondage to material sense, with its fruits,—sin, sickness, and death.

Our Leader clearly defines our indebtedness as follows: "To keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him" (Science and Health, p. 4).
