[Written for the Sentinel.]

Out of the Gloom

Out of the gloom of centuries past
There cometh a day of light;
From man-made creed to humanity's need
Is the voyage from wrong to right.
The clouds of error are floating by—
Sunlight is flooding earth and sky.

Far from the shadows of false belief
We rise to the truth of Life;
From error's sway to the better way,
Wherein there is no strife.
Following Him who the path hath trod
We journey onward and up to God.

Into the turmoil and care of life
There cometh a day of peace:
We lose the thought by error wrought,
And bid all sorrow cease.
For the Christ, the truth has come again
Into the hearts and lives of men.

Learn that to love is the one way to know
Or God or man : it is not love received
That maketh man to know the inner life
Of them that love him : his own love bestowed
Shall do it.

Jean Ingelow.
