In June, 1895, I went to Jamestown, N. Y., to try Christian Science treatment. I had no faith, but to please a relative decided to give it a trial. I had worn out medicine, and after a serious operation heard this decision: "We can do no more for you except to give you something to deaden the pain. You must be careful about overworking and careful about walking, or it will cause peritonitis," and this occurred three different times. I had also been told one lung was entirely gone and the other had a large cavity; besides the muscles about the heart were so thickened that my heart might stop at any moment.
I began treatment and bought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. In two weeks I was healed of constipation, and headaches due to a weak spine. I also wore glasses, the result of grip, and one day my practitioner found me reading Science and Health with them. She said. "Man's sight is in God, and you will find you do not need them." I replied. "I have just paid twelve dollars for them; besides, I have been told they were very becoming." Nevertheless, I removed them and was healed.
I was conscious of many ailments dropping away but there were still so many left, that had the practitioner not been full of loving kindness and patience I should have been discouraged. For three months Science and Health seemed to be a sealed book to me, but my helper declared "the light will come."
