Christian Science found me for and with anything and...
Christian Science found me for and with anything and anybody that was against the Bible. I was, so I thought, associated very closely with agnostics on the subject of religion, and was a strong advocate of evolution along with Darwin, Huxley, and others on that of science. I carried on this line of investigation for a number of years until I found Christian Science. From earliest boyhood the more profound subjects were always engaging to me, but of all the interesting subjects Christian Science stands pre-eminent as the most profound I have ever had the fortune to meet.
When Christian Science was first mentioned to me as something I needed, I said in reply that I needed nothing like that, because I was never sick. The Science, I suggested, was probably a beautiful religion, but I doubted its ability to heal. Here is the result of my investigation of its teaching.
I had used tobacco for fifteen years, and the appetite left a few years ago. I am absolutely free from any wish to smoke. I have learned to read the Bible with some sense of its true import. I think I would stay up all night rather than to be without reading the lesson. I am a member of the Christian Science church, the first church I ever joined, and the three weekly services always find me present. I gained forty-five pounds in less than nine months. My usual weight was one hundred and eighteen pounds. Now I present an appearance of healthful manhood. The elevation of the standard of thought has been the greatest attraction to me. The beauty and breadth of the Scientific thought, untrammeled with human limitations, ever appeals to me. I have learned some lessons in charity,—in refraining from criticism,—I find I am not so ready to judge others as before. I withhold my condemnation and feel better satisfied in remaining silent, even when it seems right to condemn, and let Truth have its free and perfect work, knowing this to be much better than mine.
