At the age of three years I had a very serious illness...
At the age of three years I had a very serious illness which resulted in almost stone deafness. I remained in that condition for fourteen years,—still no better. My father at last wished me to consult a good physician in London to see if there might be some hope of a cure. So to London I was taken to a very eminent physician in Soho Square. After he examined me he said he might possibly relieve me by performing an operation which would consist in the scraping of the nose and throat, but he could not promise a cure, as both the drums of the ears were completely gone. To perform the operation would cost sixty guineas. When my father heard the verdict he refused to give his consent.
Then I remember that only three weeks after, my sister, who had visited America a few months previous, and there heard of Christian Science, received a letter from a Christian Science practitioner in Buffalo which was read to me, but I could not understand it, though it struck me as being very beautiful. It seemed hardly credible to think that divine Mind was all and matter nothing, that every manifestation of disease could be destroyed by the understanding of God,—Truth, Life, and Love. However, on hearing that my sister possessed a copy of Science and Health, I said I would read it.
The understanding came very slowly but every time error tried to assert itself I used my understanding of Science, proving for myself the all-powerfulness of God and the nothingness of error. The first month after reading Science and Health my hearing was almost perfect, but through fear and beliefs the deafness seemed to return as bad as before. After six months I took treatment, thinking I was insufficiently advanced to conduct my own case. Though my understanding improved whilst undergoing treatment, the claim did not yield though bad breath was completely destroyed. Then one day the conviction came to me that I ought to work out my own salvation. At first it was a severe struggle to give up treatment, but at last I took my stand. I found I had to look into my consciousness to see if there were anything there opposed to good, and very soon laziness, stubbornness, and selfishness were found where activity, gentleness, and love ought to be. By the clear realization and practice of Mrs. Eddy's words "God rests in action" (Science and Health, p. 519), these moral errors were destroyed. Though the work was slow I am not sorry, for patience must "have her perfect work." This often cheered me when I was despondent. Whilst the work was being accomplished in overcoming moral errors, the sense of deafness gradually began to be replaced by the understanding of the all-hearing Mind, until now I am able to hear ordinary conversation. I must also add that during all my life I have had a discharge from my ears, the doctors saying there were abscesses in the head, but through Christian Science they have been cured. Influenza, scalds, neuralgia, constipation, have also yielded quickly to Science treatment.
