The Demand of the Hour
One of our poets has said: "Where real perfume is, the flower need not be sought, for the scent will disclose its whereabouts. The nettle may need to lift its head, but not so the violet." What is most required in Christian Science to-day is true simplicity. The need is for genuine workers, not talkers, and to accomplish much we must have order. Pope has said, "Order is heaven's first law," and Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Retrospection and Introspection," p. 108, that "genuine Christian Scientists are, or should be, the most systematic and law-abiding people on earth." Christian Science heals the sick, and it is our business to know this for ourselves and our suffering friends. If we work faithfully every day, and are honest and obedient to our Leader, we shall follow her, knowing that she is obedient to God. In this way we shall be prepared for every trial and we need never fear.
One of the essentials in Christian Science work is to renounce personal sense; another is to remember to be grateful for all the good we know and are able to do. We should never forget for a moment that this glorious truth has come to us because of Mrs. Eddy's untiring devotion to God, her love for humanity, and her desire to bring peace and love on earth. We know that Christian Science is the Word of God to this age, and it is therefore our business to be true, honest followers: working always for Principle and never for personality.
I long to express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for her splendid example of loyalty and obedience to God. It is through this that we have learned the way of deliverance from sin and suffering. My gratitude to our faithful Publishing Society for the splendid standard they have maintained is second only to the gratitude I feel for the continual blessings which we derive from our text-book and from the other works of our beloved Leader. The messages of Truth and Love which our periodicals contain, as well as the stimulus they bring to awakening thought, should at all times spur us on to better effort.
