It was not for physical healing that I came into Christian Science, but because I recognized it immediately as the teaching of Christ Jesus,—primitive Christianity,—but my healing came afterward. In one treatment by a loyal student of Mrs. Eddy I was healed of a serious trouble which, I had been told by two physicians, I would carry all my life. Since that time I have been climbing, slowly but steadily, up the hill of Science, and have many times been enabled to help others as well as myself through the understanding that "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468).
About eighteen months ago my brother's four children came to make their home with us, and one of them had a large sore on the side of his head, which had resisted all kinds of remedies put on it by those who had had the care of the children before they came to us. The little fellow was heartily tired of it, and told me that they were just preparing to take him to the hospital for treatment. He said that he was told to persuade me to send him to a hospital in our city. Instead, I immediately commenced Christian Science treatments, and in two weeks there was no sign of the sore left. The children soon learned the beautiful truth that God is All, and to rely entirely on Him when they seemed to be hurt.
Although the ability to help others is so beautifully satisfying, it seems but a small thing when compared with the spiritual uplifting one experiences through the study of Christian Science. The study of Science and Health leads, step by step, from darkness to light, and teaches the student how to "Abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Our text-book is most certainly a Key to the Scriptures, for it explains the Bible as nothing else ever has done, making a new book, one that can now be understood by all who study the two together. Mrs. Eddy has made it plain what God is, and what man is, giving us a God whom we can love and serve and obey.
